Hojicha Soft Serve in San Francisco
Hojicha soft serve is roasted green tea in frozen form: toasty, a little nutty, with the same low-bitterness profile that makes hojicha easy to drink. The roast survives freezing better than you’d expect, so good versions taste clearly of tea, not just brown vanilla.
Why it’s rare here
Matcha soft serve is everywhere in San Francisco. Hojicha is the harder one to find. Most shops that scoop Japanese-tea soft serve lead with matcha, and hojicha shows up as the occasional swirl or seasonal flavor, if at all.
What good looks like
- Real roasted-tea flavor, not just sweet and beige.
- Smooth, not icy.
- Restraint on the sugar, so the toastiness comes through.
Where my search stands
Everything I’ve ranked so far has been a latte, not soft serve. I haven’t found a hojicha soft serve in San Francisco worth ranking yet. When I do, it goes here and on the main list. If you know one, that’s what the links are for.
